SDS100 Upgrades?
harvey morse
I just ordered an SDS100, without the optional DMR and two other optional upgrades due to their expense of $75 each. Am I making a mistake? I am not a “programmer” or “techie” user. I just monitor the local agencies in my community as I am part of our Emergency Management Team. Thanks,

The upgrades I thought were $50?

Depends if you need them. There's a lot of NXDN and DMR near me, so the upgrades were worth it.

Look at Radio Reference for your area. See if there are systems that use DMR, etc that you want to listen to. If not, don't worry about them. You can always upgrade later if you find you want to listen to them.

https://digitalfrequencysearch.com/index.php helped me find a LOT of DMR, NDXN and P25 that wasn't in RR.

Unless there has been a price increase on the upgrades, they are a bit less than $75 each and not the same price. One is $60, another is $50, another is $49.xx (.95 or .99, something like that). Not sure which is which as far as price. It’s been a while. The SDS100 is a great radio for digital stuff, especially if you have it set up with GPS. I’ve had my for two years.

That link was very helpful! If I had those upgrades installed, and I selected my area by zip code on the SDS100, would systems operating in DMR, NDXN and P25 be automatically monitored or would additional programing be required to receive them?
Thanks, this has been a big help.

You don’t need an upgrade for P25. The three upgrades are DMR, NXDN and ProVoice. My area has systems that use all three. Some law enforcement and fire/rescue in my area use ProVoice.

If you are trying to listen to a Harris (name of the radio manufacture) ProVoice, Then NO! There is no Radio made that can decrypt it. It is Encrypted. “Unless the User of that system opens it up.” For instance. Where I live is in Mobile County Alabama At one time The City of Mobile had all its channels blocked by encryption. They now have a few of those opened up so you can hear a little. But within the County there are 7 other Cities that use the same system. All of them are completely encrypted……….

Guess again. I just checked about a half dozen vendors for the SDS100 and all that I checked except one were charging $75.00 for each upgrade. I did find one that had different prices: $99.99 for DMR, $79.99 for ProVoice, and $69.99 for NXDN.

Why go to a vendor? They're making a profit from you. Go to Uniden direct.

I could not do that here because Uniden will not even give you a price without the serial number of the scanner you want to update - and it's at home, and I'm not.

Unencrypted ProVoice can be monitored in the Uniden scanners via an upgrade, just like DMR and NXDN

I'm not the one who was asking about doing the updates. I also bought my SDS100 without any of the upgrades. There is no ProVoice around here, and although there is LOTS of DMR, there is not really any that I care to listen to. I will likely add NXDN somewhere down the road when more railroad moves to NXDN - what I ride to work is still all analog.

If I purchase all of the available upgrades for the SDS100, and I enter a zip code to monitor it, will the agencies added by the DMR, NXDN and Provoice, IF EXISTENT IN MY AREA, will be received without any further programming on my part when the zip code is scanned? The answer is "Only the ones IN THE USER-CONTRIBUTED DATABASE". So if there's a system using NXDN or DMR in your area that's not listed at radioreference.com (which is quite likely with NXDN and DMR systems) then no, you will not receive it by entering your zip code. Location based scanning is a subtractive system. It starts with many thousands of known systems and pares the list down by location and range settings. But if the data isn't in the supplied database, it won't magically find them for you. You can, however, put the data into your own private database using Sentinel software to create your own favorites list with the stuff that radioreference.com doesn't know about (if you find it elsewhere). The upgrades only affect how to decode the digital audio, not the frequency used. So yes, the zip code and/or GPS based programming
will continue to work. Those are confined to frequency, range
and your location (and service types chosen). Rick
