I bought the Compactenna scanner antenna and a mag-mount for it. Only
8 inches tall so never has to come off for parking garages. Very rugged and seems to receive well. I bought an extension cable to go from the PL-259 coax connector to the scanner's SMA connector. Not cheap, but works well. Ham Radio Outlet carries them. -- Bob Peloquin |

If there is a specific system you want to listen to, it makes sense to look for an antenna tuned to the appropriate band of frequencies.
On the other hand, if you are interested in general scanning (and scanning multiple bands), a multi-band antenna probably makes more sense. I use this one and like it (though it's kind of clunky looking):

I bought this magnetic antenna through Amazon, works well. I would, however, the the BNC connector end. I somehow ordered the PL-259 end, but a PL-259 to BNC converter took care of that.

I bought the antennas I have on my truck from TALLEY COMMUNICATIONS they have many different antennas and gadgets in their online catalog. You can get multiband antennas or use several in an array. If you remember the rooftop television antennas, that's what they did there, each bar was cut for a specific channel or frequency range. I also ordered a PA system and PA speaker. I've mounted the speaker in front of the radiator but behind the grille. I use it to tell people "your vehicle needs service your turn signals are not functional" or "DANGER WILL ROBINSON" I"ve also said "where did you learn how to drive... was getting gas and a guy was there with has car doors open and music playing loudly. I do, in fact (I'm a pilot).
Sensitivity has gotten so good in modern scanners and receivers that other than in marginal situations, most any outside mounted vehicle antenna with decent feedline will do well. In my car I use a 2-meter/440MHz antenna for my scanner and it does very well on all bands.
VHF Air band is tricky. Hearing airplanes is pretty easy. It's the ATC ground stations that can be hard to hear. ATC system antennas are seldom concerned with being heard by terrestrial users, so they aim signals generally upward. Unless you're line of site from the ground-to-air station hearing can be difficult.

If you remember the rooftop television antennas, that's what they did there, each bar was cut for a specific channel or frequency range.Obviously you know nothing about antenna design. Each "bar" (element) is part of the antenna design. The antenna was designed for a specific frequency, generally in the middle of the band. Some of them were combined for VHF and UHF but still the same design, for the middle of the band. You also buy antennas for a specific channel (frequency). Generally for a receive antenna the frequency the antenna is
designed for isn't real critical. If you were looking for
performance at a specific frequency, then you would want to get an

By installing the antenna mount on the roof, or fender of the vehicle, the "ground plane" is the roof or fender (metal). Even a magnetic mount, to the metal object, acts as the ground plane.
