996XT Repair

Steven Poleske

I have a 996XT that I think is going deaf and, the front button controls no longer work. I understand the control failure might be associated with a
disconnected ribbon cable. However, I would like to have it looked at especially regarding the deafness. My question is though, is it worth it?
Will Uniden charge me an amount to fix 1/2 the price or more than buying a new / replacement device? Thanks.

My experience with Uniden repair, is that they do top-notch work at reasonable prices. The turnover was fast when I used them. Call and talk to them.

My  thoughts on repairs and not just Uniden  over the years   when I sent things in for repair in most case  it came back working better .. I think because   this stuff  is all put  together   fast and a  quick check up and out the door..  But when its sent in the tech checks  everything  and   updates   and checks specs

Everyone Please Stay Safe

Ps  This is a great time  for scanning  lots of new  activity

They have a one price flat rate for repair, plus shipping. For your radio parts might be a problem. Go to the website & email them.

Be ready in case the reply is delayed. Uniden shut down their USA HQ this past week due to COVID-19 restrictions. They may have CSRs working from home, but perhaps not all of them and perhaps not any. I think it's safe to say few if any techs are currently working.

Please read about the repair due to the virus in first message, saying just sitting there, no repairing.
https://forums.radioreference.com/threads/third-time-repair-now-gone-indefinitely.404129/

Yes the ribbon cable needs to be pushed in on inside, had seen one do that before. Easy fix, 4 screws on back, pull the case apart, then 4 I recall the two sets of 2 top screws on the inner steel shell. Lift it off push in gently the ribbon cable.

To the deafness, assuming deaf even on noaa weather its an all too common problem. Seen about 4 996xt's personally that people have had same issue and they replace IC21. To me what I have seen here, plus on radreference too many times, design flaw.

If it's a design flaw, all units would be doing it.

Perhaps a bad batch of components, but certainly not a design flaw.
There are too many units without the issue for it to be the design.

The clock issue could be considered a design flaw. A significant
number units will exhibit the issue at some point.

One person with four failures sounds like an environmental issue.
Maybe there is a transmitter nearly blowing out the scanners.
(or perhaps if it's a component issue they all came from
the same batch if they were purchased at the same time)
