Amplified Speaker
Chris Sayles
Hello Group,
Looking for suggestions and installation notes for an amplified external speaker to mount in my car to listen to my BCD436HP. Seems the scanner itself does not have enough output to drive any non amplified speaker I have tried. Especially when driving... Also, any recommendations for using a relay or external switch to turn the powered speaker on/off In order to not run down the battery when the car is off? Thanks all for the input! Chris KK6AAR |

No, the 435 does not have an external speaker jack.

My personal favorite amplified speakers are from Motorola or GE - those 6" x 6" ones from the 90s. As for power, run it off the ACCessory line in your car. (no relay required) Joe M. On 5/6/2021 11:02 AM, Chris Sayles wrote:

I use one of these things and it works fine.
I connect my handheld scanner's earphone jack to this device's AUX input, and then feed that to an unoccupied FM broadcast frequency on my car's FM receiver. It sounds excellent.

I use the Uniden BC23A for my SDS100 with no issues. I leave it plugged in all the time. The draw is negligible. Tim, KD6MDV

If they’re still available, the Radio Shack amplified mobile speaker worked great for me, and remained reliable through years of use. I used an inline power switch on its 12v supply and it worked well. I think the speaker has a relay that shuts it off when there’s no audio. The stores are gone, but RS still sells online.

If your car has an audio AUX port, use a stereo patch cord from the headphone output to the AUX input and listen over the stereo. I have a car that has one and a car that doesn't have an AUX port, and in that car I installed an FM modulator. The FM modulator does the same thing as the AUX port, allowing me to patch in an audio source (mpe3, scanner, etc.) to play over the stereo. If your car has a cassette player, a cassette adapter is a cheap and simple solution. Good luck.

I still have about a dozen Amplified Speakers in stock. All used and working.

Yikes! I lept before looking; seeing Joe M's response about no audio output on the 436.....Maybe a headphone jack can be added from the speaker to the case.

Like everyone else, I have a 436, run it through the speakers in my car with the Aux cord. I have a Honda Accord Hybrid.
It works great. Plus is you can turn it up or down with the volume controls on the steering column. -----Original Message-----

Thanks everyone for the input! Those of you who run the BC23A Uniden speaker do you find issues with the auto off feature on this speaker? Have you disabled it? Good input on the aux input through the stereo or an FM modulator too.. Chris On May 6, 2021, at 11:17 AM, azpowells <azpowells@...> wrote:

Then patching to Aux, Cassette adapter or FM modulator are all perfect solutions allowing sound to be played on the car stereo as loud as you like. But, then again, using an earphone is cheap and simple if one doesn't want to use any of those other things. I agree that an " external speaker jack " is specific, where " audio output " is indeed very general and not specific. My apologies to those I may have confused.

I have the BC23A Uniden speaker installed in my vehicle for my HP436. Great sound and volume but I really don't like the AUTO OFF feature. If there isn't constant radio traffic and the radio is silent, you will miss the first transmission when radio traffic resumes. Also, when navigating the radio, you will not hear the first beep when pressing the keypad. Being conditioned to hear a beep every time a keypad is pressed, I would think my first keypad stroke didn't take. I found, pressing down on the volume knob twice would activate the speaker and then I would complete my keypad strokes hearing all beeps. It would be nice to be able to disable this auto off feature, but I am completely satisfied with this speaker and glad I purchased it.

I use a Bluetooth transmitter plugged in to the top of the HP436 and pair it to a Bose Sound Link speaker. You can turn the volume up with the Bluetooth speaker.

BCT15X recording output connected to aux in on Pioneer CD/radio. Sounds good! Allows separate volume control of scanner's built-in speaker, too.
