SDS100?
Joe (or anyone) - do you think the SDS100 really has good reception, as a portable radio, better than the 436? I actually don't need digital these days - but I've gotten to know enough about the 436

Re: Antenna for my minivan
So untrue
By not having a ground plane you don’t have a proper load for radio and will get a mismatch on coax

Re: Antenna for my minivan
True, not AS important (it's critical for transmitting), but it still will affect reception only having half an antenna. The counterpoise is the other half, and if missing will be noticeable on most

Re: Antenna for my minivan
Have a good ground plane is not as important if you’re only connecting a scanner to the antenna and not doing any transmitting.

Re: Antenna for my minivan
Think about it - would you rather pay $700 or $7000?
I would buy the SDS100 too rather than Motorola.

The car salesman was a little surprised when I took out a magnet and checked the trunk lid to be sure it was all steel.

Re: Antenna for my minivan
If you don't believe Rich try that in reverse sometime. Try to get the dealer down because it has a hole drilled and plugged. You will find they sing a different tune when you try using their tricks

Re: Antenna for my minivan
I have used one of the tri band Larsen NMO mount (via a NMO 3/4" hole mount) for years for scanning and it is fantastic. Very happy with its quality and performance.

The Larsen brand is one of my favorites, too. I have never tried that tri-band model, but perhaps I should. The dual-band VHF/UHF models are the best antennas I've ever used.

Re: Antenna for my minivan
I use a PulseLarsen NMO150/450/800 and an NMO mag mount from Ham Radio Outlet ( www.hamradio.com ). It stands about 17 inches tall. It is tuned very wide band for high VHF, UHF and 800 MHz reception.

That happens when they "suddenly notice" the lights and siren, too. Then they slam on the brakes. I've learned to not follow them too close. (never learned by collision, though, just to clarify
