Re: SDS100 Upgrades?
David Serio
Hi Ean, thanks for pointing out that site. I have used that before and found a lot of systems there weren't in the RR database. The reason I pointed the OP, Harvey, to the RR database is he mentioned he only wants to enter a zip code and scan, not program systems not in the RR database into the scanner.

SDS100 Upgrades?

I have just caught up on my e-mails, and hopefully I can answer your question-although I'm certain that I will receive a lot of corrections. First, you did the right thing by ordering the scanner without the upgrades. When you register your scanner on https://my.uniden.com you can purchase the upgrades for a more reasonable price. If I remember, the upgrades are $50-60 and you can do them yourself. Those that sell you the scanner are charging you to do it, and they do keep a reasonable profit for their trouble. Second, do some research and see if the three mode upgrades are in your area. www.radioreference.com has good information. My guess is that DMR will be the most popular, NXDN next, and ProVoice third. Regardless of any mode, those agency frequencies/talkgroups that are encrypted cannot be monitored on a scanner. Now to your primary question. Should you have one or more of the upgrades and you enter your zip, your scanner WILL monitor those agencies, should the information in the scanner be correct, and you have the correct "service types" selected. By default, many of the emergency/public service "service types" are already selected, but they will rarely be the ones that require the upgrades. Look through the other service types in the menu to see if anything interests you. Motorola has severely discouraged the use of their DMR radios (XPR series) to public safety or what they call "mission critical" radios. They strongly encourage the use of their P25 radios, such as the APX series. You scanner should be able to monitor them right out of the box (after you enter your zip code). As long as those agencies are not encrypted, you should be able to monitor them without the upgrades. Be sure you upgrade your scanner with BCDx36HP Sentinel. There are weekly updates that come out every Monday, generally. Enjoy scanning! '73 de JIM N2ZZ

In July of 2018 I purchased all three updates for my SDS100 from Uniden. Vendors are too expensive. The prices I paid were the same as when I bought my 436 three years previous and my 536 two years previous. I just checked the receipts: DMR... $60.00 NXDN... $50.00 ProVoice... $49,99. So, unless Uniden has raised the prices that’s what they should be. Check when you get your radio.

Correct. I monitor several systems that are ProVoice and works fine. They are not encrypted, of course.

That depends on your needs. If you have simulcast systems in your area, the SDS100 is the way to go. If not, the BCD436HP might be better. If size is a concern, the BCD325P2 might be what you want.

I had a BCD396T Years ago but I can’t find it now. It’s probably in box number 99 out of 100. It would be quicker to just get a new one.

Re: SDS100 Upgrades?
The upgrades only affect how to decode the digital audio, not the frequency used. So yes, the zip code and/or GPS based programming
will continue to work. Those are confined to frequency, range
and your location (and service types chosen). Rick

Re: SDS100 Upgrades?
bob_peloquin
The answer is "Only the ones IN THE USER-CONTRIBUTED DATABASE". So if there's a system using NXDN or DMR in your area that's not listed at radioreference.com (which is quite likely with NXDN and DMR systems) then no, you will not receive it by entering your zip code. Location based scanning is a subtractive system. It starts with many thousands of known systems and pares the list down by location and range settings. But if the data isn't in the supplied database, it won't magically find them for you. You can, however, put the data into your own private database using Sentinel software to create your own favorites list with the stuff that radioreference.com doesn't know about (if you find it elsewhere).
