Re: BCD536HP No audio on P25 Trunk Phase 1 System none simulcast system

Leslie Polt

Does the scanner properly receive any other programmed P25 trunking systems, simulcast sites or otherwise? Did you park the scanner on one of the frequencies in the system (not a control channel) to see if any of the transmissions are received. You may need to wait for a transmission, and  probably will not hear the entire conversation,  but it might tell you that the receiver is decoding P25 digital transmissions, but  not trunking.

Turn the scanner on
Press mute to unmute if needed

READ from the scanner into Sentinel OVERWRITING your existing file/s.

Put that into your other scanner and test.  The mute on power up should now be gone.  It is clearly a programming issue.

Good luck,

Try turning the mute off, then read the scanner, then write back and see what happens. It could be a part of the RAM in the scanner going bad. That unit is only what? 20 years old?

It looks to be pointing to the software, look it over real good and find what's holding the mute mode on.

I recently got a new BCD536HP. I programmed it via Sentinel with my Favorites list and I am not getting anything on my states System(MSCommNet). I tried resetting the user settings, the full database and entering the system by hand with no luck at all. Im able to hear everything else just fine. I'm also running the latest firmware for the 536. I'm able to hear the system just fine on my Whistler TRX-1, and my Unication G2. So I know its not programmed wrong or anything. What happens is a talkgroup will pop up but there will be no audio and yet i get Audio from other 2 devices at the same time.

Hi Tim,

If you use a computer to program them you might try downloading the current download you have after first checking to see if MUTE is activated.

Just open it up and install a cigarette plug and a 3.5 mono hack and all will be ok. REMEMBER that volume control is inside unit.

Eddie,

I managed a Radio Shack in the early nineties, so this info may be out of date.  RS did have their own repair facilities in various locations around the country.

If you don't have a local RS any longer to take it in, try calling their customer service:

RadioShack Customer Care
900 Terminal Rd #244
Fort Worth, TX 76106 USA
1-800-THE-SHACK

If the scanner doesn't need parts, they may yet have techs that can tune up the scanner.  A caveat, however...  Typically, the techs were not capable of these types of repairs.  We had a term for the techs back then:  Board Swappin' Idiots.  It was faster, cheaper, and required less technical savvy to simply swap the boards and ship back the products.  Honestly, I presume that Uniden does exactly the same.  As Bill said above, if the boards are no longer available, doubtful the support centers can do much of anything.

The schematics are likely available online and a good TV repair shop should be able to tune up the radio/resolder the antenna connector for you...   if you can find one.

As with anything with chips in it, parts are in short supply and that’s aggravated by the age of the unit. Still, there is an option available for repair. G&G Communications in LeRoy, NY will work on a digital scanner for $60 + parts + shipping. https://www.gcomradio.com/repinfo.html

The question is, will it be worth it? An eBay search shows a bunch of hand-held trunking scanners available in or below the repair cost. Caveats about buying electronics on eBay apply. A seller with a lot of sales and a 99.something% plus rating is usually safe enough. There is also the option of buying one at a ham fest or a local flea market. You are hands-on there and the prices are usually pretty low.

Good luck, no matter which direction you choose.

Re: SDS 100 and Nags Head

The local system you entered was Dare County Public Safety Project 25 Phase I, yes?

Earlier this year, I was visiting Pawleys Island, SC in Georgetown County.  Using my 436HP with GPS, I would get the Palmetto 800 P-25 Phase I system with plenty of SCHP traffic and other traffic but no Georgetown County Talkgroup user traffic.

I entered a Pawleys Island zip code, again plenty of SCHP traffic, but no luck for Georgetown County TG's

I had programed my 396XT with Georgetown County Conventional freqs but had not programed the Palmetto 800 System since the 436HP would do that via GPS/Zip Code.

I manually programed the Palmetto 800 System with SCHP and Georgetown County TG's in my 396XL and began getting traffic on the Georgetown Local TG's.  I then did the same, manually programmed my 436HP and began to receive Georgetown County TG's.

Programing manually worked fine.  Using the GPS and/or Zip Code function, I wasn't receiving Georgetown County TG's.

Manually programing both systems might have been the solution, it worked for me in Pawleys Island, SC.
