BCT15X P25 Upgrade
I've got a BCT15X in my truck mounted in a console with a custom faceplate. I'm interested in upgrading to P25 digital capability, but need something that fits the same mount. I've looked at the BCD996P2, which looks to be the same box with more capability. I've seen a lot of talk about the SDS200, but I don't know if it is the same DIN form factor to fit my mount.
Suggestions? -- 73, Michael WA7SKG "Any day you do not learn one new thing is a wasted day."

I just did Michal after years of not having the requisite knowledge to program my PRO-197. It was not inexpensive but we'll worth the cost. The Uniden software programming is free.

Michal,
I'm not sure what you mean exactly by "getting into Uniden." Is there a particular model you are considering? Are you transitioning from Whistler or some other line? Are there particular types of systems/objects you want to monitor, or a specific location?

Bernie Skoch

Maybe we should push the media – actually, don’t some of them get to listen in on encrypted stuff too?
From: <main@Uniden.groups.io> on behalf of John Harris <jharris58@...>
You would think that in these times LE would want to be transparent (in the clear). I'm surprised the media isn't pushing that issue.

They have been pushing it. But protecting the tactical nature of many LE operations has won the argument so far.

Re: Uniden Sentinel missing some CA Trunked systems?
LE encryption needs are debatable; though there
ARE a few specific times to encrypt (undercover, SWAT).
Encryption doesn't lend to the open public view of the agency
and tends to cause mistrust in those that want to listen in
(what are they hiding?). It shouldn't be debated here in any
case (waste of expelled vapor, time or effort). When fire needs to encrypt (even more rarely)
it's often punted to a cell phone (arson investigation being
primary) Being able to clearly listen to both not only
makes interoperability simpler (cross agency/discipline) it also
allows the general public a little more lead time when something
goes down, shelter in place for active shooter; start moving the
livestock for an evacuation and even the mundane; to be aware of
events in/near your neighborhood (Sam is drunk again and
slapping his wife around; fire/medical down the street and these
days 'peaceful protestors' creating havoc) to react
appropriately. Having spent a career in fire, being
situationally aware is in my DNA. I will add that requiring dispatch to either
relay to another dispatcher or set up a link (patch) between
radio networks, has not exactly worked well for LE. I'm in N
ID, within 30 miles of two state lines and the country border,
listened to a FUBAR 3 state high speed chase (100+), a mix of
analog and P25, some unencrypted, a 4 agency 'blend'). WA(SP)
to ID(ISP) to MT(SP) with Shoshone and Kootenai counties, almost
all on disparate systems... a comms disaster; they ALL had to
hear/talk to each other... and couldn't. The perp eventually
ran out of fuel, just before MT (big hill, twisty climb) and got
pounced on. Having the switch to quickly turn off encryption
(better 'spatch training too) would make such cases so much
better for LE and safer for the public (catch the miscreant
quicker) since (my point in this story) most LE vehicles (here)
also have scanners (to bypass the middleman and hear directly).
Encryption denies LE (public safety) to better do their job. Rick NK7I

It wasn't Law Enforcement. LE in Orange county has been full time encrypted for MANY years. Fire was not. When they migrated to the P-25 system, fire got changed to encrypted - without (as I understand it) anyone in the fire organizations knowing that was going to happen. There was a huge backlash from the fire agencies to switch fire back to clear. Law still is encrypted.

Re: Uniden Sentinel missing some CA Trunked systems?
Not just scannerheads, but news media (MUCH harder to track to scoop), amateur radio ops (inter-related on safety issues), off duty fire (gotta listen to be quick on that OT call) and smaller groups like neighborhood watch. Again, I've not heard that they relented, only that they were going to relent. I'm a thousand miles away so I don't listen. 73,

If memory serves correctly, and with my age getting up there, that’s a question! But I think I remember reading that many complained that they encrypted fire, along with everything else. People who lived in wildfire areas, and monitored fire comms via scanners were very upset. OC relented.
But I could be very wrong about this, so don’t take this as fact. Scott AC2FV Scott Conover Email: xtraham@... Amateur Call: AC2FV GMRS Call:WQRD399 RACES ID: 2-002 ARES AEC, Town of Huntington SkyWarn: 19-36-NYC CERT O|||||O

If memory serves (sometimes it does), OC went encrypted last year. There was much hue and cry from various sources and OC relented to not use encryption. However I've not seen any mention of the network being heard since then; some issues between vendor and buyer, it became political, slowing the entire process. If it is still encrypted, you won't hear anything. By now, the database should have picked up (and corrected) any change of frequencies. Regards, On 10/4/2020 10:59 AM, Joe M. wrote:

The stakeholders opted to update the entire system including handhelds, base stations and our share of the system front end including, antennas, microwaves. I retired near the end of planning.
