Scanner programing

I guess I'm just old , but this all confuses me, isn't there just a plain old way to enter frequencies without all the extra steps (programming) to make it more simple.

This is a very good tutorial to program your scanner https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9qx-hsiXOcE

Yes you can program it by hand if you want.

You must first create a new System and new Department
and new Channel, but that is as simple as it looks.

Donald Lambert <banjodhl@...>

You can do a Quick Save.

In Scan Mode: Press Hold in any channel

Enter the freq. and press E/yes

At Quick Freq Save? press E/Yes

NOTE: if freq is already stored in the group, "Frequency Exists Accept? (Y/N) appears, Press (,)no to return the freq will be saved a (created) group called "Qck Save Grp" in a created system called "Qck Save Cnv Sys"(no quick key will be assigned).

Sorry, not really. It is doable, but very tedious. I suggest using the FreeScan software. It really simplifies things. Especially that you can copy lists from the Internet and paste them in and it will import for you. Saves tons of typing.

Not with these dynamic memory allocation scanners. It's all about systems, groups, and channels

It always has been, really.

You had one scanner (System).
You typically had ten banks (Groups).
You had X channels (no change there at all).

The only difference is that you have to create the system, then create the banks (Groups), then add the number of Channels you want, then fill in the details (frequencies, CTCSS/CDCSS/Etc, Channel Name, and so forth).

For far I like the Quick Save idea from Don L. No need to set anything up. Of course you will have much less control over it, too.

Basically, no straight way to do it the old way.  Digital systems is part of the problem.

Apparently when the scanner makers went to dynamic (like a PC) memory, they chose not to program it to behave like earlier scanners.  Dunno if there is a fundamental reason why a "shell" could not be created to mimic the older method.

That left users to try and figure out the new systems.  Lots of "It is not so hard" articles popped up to defend the new regime, but the issue remains.

I have both Uniden and Whistler radios, and still hate the new methods required to manipulate memories.  That is after you successfully program them, which I exclusively use software to do.

My opinion is they shot themselves in the foot with this "dynamic" memory leap.   The number of returned scanners on Amazon from those giving up trying to figure it out are likely matched by those reading reviews and staying away.

Lots of things change with technology shifts. It is a fact of life. I know the learning curve is steep in some cases, and having to resort to using software to program today's scanners can be a pain, but, to me anyway, the gain is well worth it. There are indeed times I wish there were still basic, cheap, simple analog scanners available. In fact, looking around the shack here, I see a number of Radio Shack and Uniden scanners I paid <$100 for still seeing active daily use. Yes, they only have 100 or so channels, and they have some banks that only have a few channels programmed and some banks that don't have enough channels for that group/purpose, but they do fill the need.

The fact that my main scanner (BCT15X) has a dynamic memory so some 'banks' have ten channels and some have 60 with no wasted memory is wonderful to me. The added bells and whistles provided by the dynamic memory is a real plus, but added features are necessarily going to add programming complexity.

The same goes for an increasing number of devices. Many of today's portable and mobile ham radios are an exercise in complete frustration to try and program from the keypad/front panel and require a computer to set many parameters.

But, look how far we have come from the days of the Regency ten channel scanners that you had to buy a new crystal for every time you wanted to change a frequency.

Time and technology marches on. We just have to grow with it and learn new things. Or take up basket weaving or knitting.

It is really no more complex or difficult than programming any other scanner; there is only one additional step.

The biggest problem is the supplied manual, which is Very hard to deal with.
I've managed to get what I need from it, but there is a better version done independently
by someone whose name I can't remember.
