796D powers up in MUTE mode
Tim L
Hi all,
I have two 796D's and both of them power up in mute mode. I have to hold mute for a few seconds after turning the scanner on to un-mute the radio. I don't see any option in the menu or user manual to enable or disable such an option. Has anyone else seen this and know how to disable it? This problem started only after using ProScan to control each of the two 796's. Neither radio had this issue until i started to control the radio with Proscan. I have even tried a factory reset and that does not clear this issue. |

The issue is within ProScan. Look for a mute control.

I do not recall the exact button that causes this, but have heard of the issue several times. In each case the solution was in ProScan. Joe M. On 12/7/2021 10:41 PM, Tim L wrote:

Thanks Joe
Yea I know the problem is with proscan. I just bought a second 796 and it worked fine for several weeks until i connected to it with proscan. now it also has the mute problem. I have tried the factory reset and does not clear what ever bit the proscan software
sets. If I change the mute from AUTO to off it opens the squelch all the way. Seems to me there is an issue related to mute & Squelch mode on the 796. The 796 does not have ANY option in the menu to control mute so i believe proscan software is writing an
invalid bit that may be related to 536/436 or some other uniden model. I tried emailing Proscan with this issue and got the typical run around. If anyone knows how to resolve this issue, please let me know.

Also ensure that the speaker icon is not showing muted. If it is then click it to unmute the speaker. On Tue, Dec 7, 2021 at 7:41 PM Tim L <ptim15@...> wrote:

Go to the Scanner Settings tab then look for a Speaker Mute parameter. Change that to Auto. Bob Aune ProScan Taking Scanning To The Next Level! On Tue, Dec 7, 2021 at 8:02 PM Joe M. <mch@...> wrote: The issue is within ProScan. Look for a mute control. |

Can you adjust the squelch after that?

I think the speaker icon Bob mentioned is what I was trying to think of earlier. Joe M. On 12/8/2021 12:19 AM, Tim L wrote:

Hello,
If I set the Speaker Mute to 'OFF' the squelch opens all the way and will not adjust to a quieting level
If I set the Speaker Mute to 'ON' the Radio mutes as it should
If I set the Speaker Mute to 'AUTO' the radio acts normal however in 'AUTO' mode the radio always powers
on in MUTE mode

If I change the mute from AUTO to off it opens the squelch all the way. Seems to me there is an issue related to mute & Squelch mode on the 796. That's the way the scanner operation works. Don't set the Speaker Mute to Off. ProScan sends a MUF command to the scanner which will open the squelch. Per the PCi_bc796_v105.pdf protocol document Controller → Radio MUN[\r] :Set MUTE ON(by force)mode. MUF[\r] :Set MUTE OFF(by force)mode. MUA[\r] :Set AUTO MUTE control mode. I tried emailing Proscan with this issue and got the typical run around. I didn't intend to give you the run-around. I was in the Q&A phase trying to get a handle on the problem. I was going to send you test files to see what's going on but then you were thinking it was a scanner or computer problem and we lost contact. Send me an email and I will send you test files to see what's going on or at least, disable the Speaker mute function to see if that resolves the issue. |

I run a 796 & 785 on Proscan and don’t have that issue with audio.
