Re: Albany NY P25 P1 systems setup

Ok, I thought I had to put them in - thank you!
... I'm doing this by hand, and it's been a long time since I last programmed it lol). Just looked at RR and see that Albany is now the Albany -Schenectady Counties system, and they switched over to phase 2, so looks as tho I won't be programming the 796d for him afterall! .... and I'm sure he'll want a HP2 for Christmas lol. Guess dad's gonna have to work some overtime! Thanks again

Blocks and sizes don't apply to P25 systems.

Can anyone please help me with information on what to put in as the block & size , for the Albany City, & Albany County (New York) P25 P1 systems?
I'm programming my 796d for my son who is an EMT/FF in Albany, as a Christmas gift. Thanks Dave Runion

Hi Dave,
Looks like that county migrated to a APCO 25 Phase II system that the BCD796D won't follow.

Re: 796D and the San Diego County Sheriff Dispatch

Hi All,
Can anyone tell me if my BC796D is still usable for the San Diego County and vicinity dispatch frequencies? I pulled the radio from service about five years ago when it was working fine but when I set it back up I've found large gaps in the bands. I use Proscan and reloaded all the programming as it's always been but still no joy.
Tks,

I run a 796 & 785 on Proscan and don’t have that issue with audio.

If I change the mute from AUTO to off it opens the squelch all the way. Seems to me there is an issue related to mute & Squelch mode on the 796. That's the way the scanner operation works. Don't set the Speaker Mute to Off. ProScan sends a MUF command to the scanner which will open the squelch. Per the PCi_bc796_v105.pdf protocol document Controller → Radio MUN[\r] :Set MUTE ON(by force)mode. MUF[\r] :Set MUTE OFF(by force)mode. MUA[\r] :Set AUTO MUTE control mode. I tried emailing Proscan with this issue and got the typical run around. I didn't intend to give you the run-around. I was in the Q&A phase trying to get a handle on the problem. I was going to send you test files to see what's going on but then you were thinking it was a scanner or computer problem and we lost contact. Send me an email and I will send you test files to see what's going on or at least, disable the Speaker mute function to see if that resolves the issue.

Hello,
If I set the Speaker Mute to 'OFF' the squelch opens all the way and will not adjust to a quieting level
If I set the Speaker Mute to 'ON' the Radio mutes as it should
If I set the Speaker Mute to 'AUTO' the radio acts normal however in 'AUTO' mode the radio always powers
on in MUTE mode

I think the speaker icon Bob mentioned is what I was trying to think of earlier. Joe M. On 12/8/2021 12:19 AM, Tim L wrote: > > If I change the mute from AUTO to off it opens the squelch all the way.

Go to the Scanner Settings tab then look for a Speaker Mute parameter. Change that to Auto. Bob Aune ProScan Taking Scanning To The Next Level!

Also ensure that the speaker icon is not showing muted. If it is then click it to unmute the speaker.

Thanks Joe
Yea I know the problem is with proscan. I just bought a second 796 and it worked fine for several weeks until i connected to it with proscan. now it also has the mute problem. I have tried the factory reset and does not clear what ever bit the proscan software
sets. If I change the mute from AUTO to off it opens the squelch all the way. Seems to me there is an issue related to mute & Squelch mode on the 796. The 796 does not have ANY option in the menu to control mute so i believe proscan software is writing an
invalid bit that may be related to 536/436 or some other uniden model. I tried emailing Proscan with this issue and got the typical run around. If anyone knows how to resolve this issue, please let me know.

I do not recall the exact button that causes this, but have heard of the issue several times. In each case the solution was in ProScan. Joe M. 796D powers up in MUTE mode
Tim L
Hi all,
I have two 796D's and both of them power up in mute mode. I have to hold mute for a few seconds after turning the scanner on to un-mute the radio. I don't see any option in the menu or user manual to enable or disable such an option. Has anyone else seen this and know how to disable it? This problem started only after using ProScan to control each of the two 796's. Neither radio had this issue until i started to control the radio with Proscan. I have even tried a factory reset and that does not clear this issue.

Unit Stops Scanning - Heat Issue?
Roxie2401
This has been a very reliable unit serves me well with both trunking and conventional systems - until recently.
For twelve years I have taken the BC296D to the Indy 500 --- programmed several banks with all conventional frequencies ---- and it has run the entire time, about four hours, with no problems. Last year it stopped "responding" after about an hour.?? I could see activity on the display but it would not stop on any active channels (including the IMS track broadcast - which is continuously active. I powered down (no low battery indication) but changed to a fully charged new battery.?? Same result - could hear the power on "pop" both from the speaker and the headphones.?? No scanning. Powered down and changed the antenna (standard Uniden supplied original).?? Same result --- display cycles through the standard start screens ---- no scanning. After arriving home two days later scanner performed normally --- local conventional systems received normally?? (Note:?? this bank was already in the scanner so no change to any channel/bank programming.). ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- So, a year goes by and I take the BC296D back to Indy.?? Same thing happens?? ----- stops receiving.???? This year, as a backup I had taken an old Uniden Sportcat 200.?? Put the BC296D away and the 200 performed well (with less channels, of course). A Uniden Tech "thinks" the 296 "May" have a heat protection component that will shut the unit down if it senses an over-heating situation.?? And yes, I have always kept the unit in the original nylon case.?? But, there have been much hotter temperatures at Indy in past years and I have never experienced this situation before. So, I haven't completely accepted the "over heating" idea. I rralize this is an older unit and this forum is not very active ---- but if anyone has seen this issue or has any thoughts, I would appreciate any input. Uniden does still show this unit as being "repairable" and the cost is reasonable.?? I just want to be sure I have not done something stupid that can be corrected before shipping it off to repair. I was even thinking of starting it scanning and put it in the sun to see if I could duplicate the problem?? --- but that could really ruin the unit for sure. Sorry to make this a long post but wanted to give any forum members as much data as possible. Maybe MCH will have some prior information. Thanks!
